The Hopewell Community was established in an isolated area of the Texas Hill Country in the 1840’s. The pioneers struggled to make a living in an unforgiving environment and the always-present threat of Indian raids. Wofford and his wife, Mary Johnson paid the ultimate price when Comanche warriors killed them along with their young daughter in 1863. A small cemetery is all that remains of the failed settlement. They are buried alongside other pioneers and their descendants as well as veterans from the Civil War. The cemetery is located west of Liberty Hill off FM1869 and south on 284. A good county road map book is handy to avoid getting lost in the maze of small county roads.
